Sign Kommunikation, Frankfurt am Main, Interior Design

For the new offices of graphic design agency Sign Kommunikation, an industrial building was converted in the east of Frankfurt. PHILIPP MAINZER OFFICE FOR ARCHITECTURE AND DESIGN redesigned the 430 sqm space to accommodate an open-plan office with meeting rooms, kitchen, archive and a small studio.

Retaining the industrial charm of the building, the generous interior was completely gutted to realise a bright and spacious layout. An inserted wall clad with walnut veneer creates a warm highlight in the otherwise reduced design concept and separates the work desks visually and acoustically from a presentation area as well as the remaining rooms. Furniture in solid oak juxtaposes the white walls and flooring in light tones, presenting an intriguing contrast.

ekn, Frankfurt am Main, Interior Design

In close collaboration with ekn footwear founder Noel Klein-Reesink, PHILIPP MAINZER OFFICE FOR ARCHITECTURE AND DESIGN, together with Paul Bauer, has realised the interior design of ekn’s first store in Frankfurt.

Located at Danziger Platz, in the city’s vibrant Ostend neighbourhood, the multifunctional space features an open and focused interior,
serving as the new headquarter for the ecological shoe brand.

At the core of the interior design are stacked cubicles, creating an abstract sculptural appearance and an intriguing perspective. The boxes made from OSB boards function as presentation platforms for the latest collection, as work spaces, as well as an archive to showcase the high quality materials which are central to the brand’s identity. A treatment with white pigments transforms the recycled wood into a unique statement. Raw concrete floor and white walls are set against the versatile cubes, resulting in a minimal interior which puts the products as well as the users of the space in focus.

ekn was founded in 2013, offering shoes handmade in Portugal from organic materials and under fair conditions. Combining products with maximum quality and a minimal ecological footprint, the brand with a strong network in the music and art scene distributes its shoes internationally.

With recent projects such as the deli Louis Pretty in Berlin, and a distillery for the German gin Monkey 47 in Loßburg, PHILIPP MAINZER OFFICE FOR ARCHITECTURE AND DESIGN works internationally on commercial, residential and cultural projects, providing full architectural and design services.

CLOSED, Stuttgart, Interior Design

For international fashion label Closed, PHILIPP MAINZER OFFICE FOR ARCHITECTURE AND DESIGN completes the new women’s store in Stuttgart. Located in the landmarked building ‘König von England’, the architecture of the 172 sqm space references the building’s modernist roots and brings forth a progressive interior concept.

A diagonal pale rose wall with hanging brass elements, inspired by the work of minimalist artist Anne Truitt, allows for intriguing perspectives, leading the customer through the store. Emphasising the modern and enduring zeitgeist of the Closed brand, a warm mix of wood elements such as birch and palisander is set in contrast with burnt orange window elements. Bordeaux Rosso Belgio and black Nero Marquina marble tables provide additional presentation space.

Since 2004, PHILIPP MAINZER OFFICE FOR ARCHITECTURE AND DESIGN has collaborated with Closed in creating a progressive and identifiable brand architecture for the label. This includes the design and realisation of all Closed retail stores, showroom spaces as well as numerous international exhibition stands for the brand.

CLOSED headquarters, Hamburg, Interior Design

For the international fashion label Closed, PHILIPP MAINZER OFFICE FOR ARCHITECTURE AND DESIGN completed the expansion of the headquarters in Hamburg, Germany. The 1,375 sqm space doubles the existing office area and integrates the company’s Online Services team and in-house photo studio.

Located in the residential neighbourhood of Eppendorf, the interior of the former tramway depot with typical 1890’s red brick façade was restructured to provide both workspaces and communal areas. On the ground floor, offices with glass walls are situated around an atrium space with greens, while an open office layout on the first floor generates a light-flooded working environment essential for a communal and creative atmosphere.

Focal point of the expanded space is the spacious restaurant and kitchen with double height ceilings. Contrasting the industrial architecture, solid oak dining tables and benches by David Chipperfield for e15 elegantly highlight simplicity and warmth.

CLOSED, Oldenburg, Interior Design

For international fashion label Closed, PHILIPP MAINZER OFFICE FOR ARCHITECTURE AND DESIGN was commissioned to design the brand’s new store in Oldenburg. The 157 sqm space integrates with multi brand store Du Nord, also designed by the office, into a 373 sqm fashion and lifestyle destination in the heart of the city’s old town.

The interior and its high concrete ceilings reveal an impressive modern space arranged in a composition of intriguing presentation forms and spaces for men and women rendered in an original mix of colours and materials. Preserving the industrial character of the space, a thin black lighting system is silhouetted against the raw concrete as an informal contrast to the solid oak floor radiating warmth. Emphasising the authentic yet innovative character of the Closed brand, high-grade materials such as oak, bronze and marble have been combined into a modern and progressive interior concept.

Du Nord, Oldenburg, Interior Design

PHILIPP MAINZER OFFICE FOR ARCHITECTURE AND DESIGN was commissioned with the interior design of multi brand store Du Nord in Oldenburg. The 179 sqm space offers room for the selected range of fashion and lifestyle products and integrates with a Closed mono brand store, also designed by the office.

To create the retail space in the heart of the city’s old town, the original, historic building was reconstructed, creating an intriguing contrast with the neighbouring modern architecture. Inside, high concrete ceilings and exposed ventilation shafts contribute to an industrial look. The floor made from solid oak contrasts the raw concrete and brings warmth and comfort to the space.

A sophisticated palette of high-grade materials mixed with a subtle range of colours brings focus to the architectural interior, highlighted by the shifting cubical forms that function both as sculptural presentation platforms and storage units. Bespoke back lit shelves in pale grey give way to lean and elegant intermitted hanging rails designed to bring focus to each collection of fashion. The integrated lounge highlighted in solid walnut and brass welcomes customers to linger and extend their visit.

Inspired by the idea of a luxuriously comfortable dining experience and the progressive interior concept, combining contrasting materials and modernist architecture, the upholstered seating offers great comfort and supports an elegant interior. Aesop, Frankfurt am Main, Interior Design

PHILIPP MAINZER OFFICE FOR ARCHITECTURE AND DESIGN has been comissioned to develop the interior design of Aesop’s new signature store in Frankfurt, opening in June 2015. Referencing the regional heritage, key pieces of the e15 collection are part of the interior concept.

In collaboration with Aesop, a stimulating and authentic environment exploring Frankfurt’s modernist roots and its cultural heritage has been realised by PHILIPP MAINZER OFFICE FOR ARCHITECTURE AND DESIGN for Aesop’s fifth signature store in Germany.

Inspired by the forest green of the German landscape and well crafted natural materials such as solid walnut, raw brass and matt finished „Bembel“ grey floor tiles, Aesop’s superlative products are presented in striking harmony, whilst celebrating Frankfurt and its cultural roots.

The architecture focuses on the product rather than competing with it. Back-lit shelves in forest green float along the pale green-grey walls, generating a natural and complementing environment that supports the central element of the store, which is a monolithic solid walnut structure integrating a multi purpose sink in raw brass. Essential for experiencing the products, the sink becomes the core element within the space. Distinctly arranged matt grey floor tiles refer to the sand grey, salt-glazed stoneware ceramic typical for the Frankfurt region.

For the new store at Frankfurt Kaiserplatz, key pieces of German furniture brand e15 have been specified. Cypress green mohair lounge chair WEISSENHOF, solid walnut and natural leather stool ASWAN and chair KARNAK (circa 1925-26), all by Ferdinand Kramer, along with an original George Nelson Half lamp in brass (circa 1950) bring warmth and comfort to the space.

e15 headquarter, Frankfurt am Main, Interior Design

For the new headquarter for premium brand e15 a former site of the international industrial company Lurgi in east Frankfurt was converted. The scope included the conversion of a 540 sqm two-storey industrial building into offices, as well as the redesign of a 1230 sqm large space into logistic facilities and a further 425 sqm large building into a new exhibition and studio space for the modern furniture brand.

The former 540 sqm large canteen of the Lurgi company was converted into the new offices of e15 and PHILIPP MAINZER OFFICE FOR ARCHITECTURE AND DESIGN. Retaining the industrial charm of the red brick architecture with its elongated saddle roofs, the generous canteen was completely gutted and a bright and spacious open plan office with acoustic ceiling was realised. Without diminishing the generosity of the space, the different departments are visually and acoustically separated from each other by shelving. Spanning the length of the space separating walls were installed, which divide the workplace from the back office and storage area, further structuring the space. Desks in solid oak present a visually contrasting, warm highlight in the clear office interior.

Using the existing building stock a generous meeting room and kitchen were created as well as separate individual offices for management and accounting. The first floor space was converted into a spacious communal kitchen and library, which offer additional work and communication space. The specifically designed fitted kitchen from solid core panels dyed in black emphasise the humble character of the interior.

An additional industrial warehouse space on site was redesigned to function as a showroom and studio space. In the generous hall with its concrete flooring, existing ceiling construction and extending crane system, a room within a room was created, functioning as a think tank and meeting room as well as model making facility. Constructed from clear lacquered chipboard, the structure underlines the authentic environment of this industrial space. Additionally, a set of white walls and platforms divide the space generating individual presentation areas featuring the e15 collection comprehensively.

CLOSED, Bread & Butter, Berlin, Exhibition Design

For the international fashion label Closed an exhibition design was realised in the space of the former editorial offices of Berlin’s famous city magazine „Tip Berlin“ in the course of Berlin’s fashion show Bread & Butter in July 2013. The 550 sqm presentation on the ground floor of an Art Nouveau building was developed to exude an abstract character. Diverse and bespoken clothes racks with elements of coloured glass and mirror were created to present the new collection and underline the modern aesthetic of the fashion label. Cabinet tables made of black and white metal with elements of marble and brass as well as the bespoke clothes racks were used to structure the huge space into individual rooms and increased the abstract and geometric effect. An outside lounge area underlined the artistic event character of the exhibition.

In 2004, the collaboration with the Hamburg based fashion label Closed started with the realisation of the company’s first flagship store in downtown Hamburg. Since then, the fashion label commissioned the interior design of Closed stores and showrooms around the world with the briefing to establish a distinct global corporate architecture for the brand.

CLOSED, Hamburg, Interior Design

For fashion label Closed PHILIPP MAINZER OFFICE FOR ARCHITECTURE AND DESIGN was commissioned to redesign the brand’s first flagship store on Bergstrasse in Hamburg. Completed in March 2013, the 226 sqm interior is divided into a separate male and female space yet featuring an open interior design, having eliminated all interior walls. A large glass window front of the corner store allows for optimum use of daylight, resulting in a bright and airy interior and maximum use of display space to the exterior.

The redesign of the Hamburg flagship store features the brand new architectural concept whereby the space is created as a bright, airy and open interior with a number of new designed display units, providing for a combination of hanging and flat presentations. New central pieces are the steel-framed glass cabinets with built-in fluorescent lighting, open shelves from black lacquered wood veneer and a new black steel cabinet. The cool and artistic look is balanced by warm elements such as white marble tables, a signature wall in yellow as well as a free-standing wooden cabinet used for jewellery display. Grey oiled solid wooden floorboards and hanging space via thin, elegant black coat racks positioned along the walls over bench elements strengthen the overall appearance, expressing a modern and forward quality of the brand. With the new store concept a dynamic within the space is generated, encouraging the customer to move around the merchandise.

The redesign of the Hamburg flagship store reflects the continuation of the close and ongoing working relationship between the two companies. Since 2004, PHILIPP MAINZER has realised all showroom and store spaces as well as exhibitions for the international fashion brand and created a recognisable brand architecture for the label.

CLOSED, Gallery Nolin Judin, Berlin, Exhibition Design

For the international fashion brand Closed, an exhibition design at Nolin Judin Gallery was developed in the context of the fashion fair Bread & Butter 2013 in Berlin. A 275 sqm presentation with bespoke furniture was created, underlining the pure and innovative character of the fashion brand’s collection.

A black wooden catwalk was designed to meander through the space seeming to float above the bright floor and flanked by glass cabinets on both sides. The 2 m high custom-made cabinets, made from glass in a frame of powder-coated steel in umbra grey highlighted the men’s and women’s fashion in a distinct and progressive way. Illuminated from the bottom of the glass cabinets the garments obtained a weightless character, especially when presented lying on the glass surface of the pure cabinet tables. Completed by three different shapes of steel clothes racks, the clothing presentation was accentuated by painted curry-coloured walls, a sensitive ceiling illumination as well as beamer projections of CLOSED catwalk situations.

In 2004, the collaboration with the Hamburg based fashion label Closed started with the realisation of the company’s first flagship store in downtown Hamburg. The Borsellinos, Wallhausen, Architecture

For the conversion of an 102-year old barn into offices for the design agency and publishers of the magazine AORTICA, THE BORSELLINOS, the existing traditional structure was juxtaposed with modern features. The exterior and the new roof were coloured dark as a contrast to the adjacent buildings. Newly positioned, frameless windows communicate a modern aesthetic. In contrast to the dark exterior, the interior with walls all in white features a large, specially designed multifunctional furniture unit, accommodating storage, kitchen, bathroom and mezzanine. The autonomy of the structure is emphasised as it is positioned orthogonally free-standing, non paying attention to the sloped angles of the existing structure. The project was designed together with architect Fabian Mainzer and executed in close collaboration with the owners.

Bergman, Frankfurt am Main, Interior Design

In 2000, the Bergman shop in downtown Frankfurt was realized. Designed as a concept store, PHILIPP MAINZER developed an interior layout that was entirely new and unique in Germany. On three levels covering more than 400 sqm of space, men´s amd women´s fashions were displayed alongside furniture, home accessories, beauty products, books, music and more. Bergman`s philosophy was to approach the design topic with a dynamic, yet reduced aestheticism that emphasizes the unique identity, quality and individual story of each of its products. The interior design expanded on this basic theme to produce balanced, well-designed spaces that highlight the presentation of the products without undue distraction.
