PHILIPP MAINZER OFFICE FOR ARCHITECTURE AND DESIGN has been commissioned with the design of a premium 12-storey residential building in the centre of Taipei, Taiwan. In an urban yet green surrounding, the future residents will be able to enjoy exclusive living and the advantages of a green setting in a central location in the city.

The first eleven floors are standard floors, each storey housing three generous apartments of approx. 70 – 80 sqm. The design concept focuses on a spacious and open construction, implementing open and flowing spaces. The top floor accommodates an exclusive penthouse of approx. 100 sqm, including a roof-top terrace, consequently developing the generous design further. Offering spacious and modern living, the apartments provide ultimate comfort as well as a great sense of wellbeing.

Planning permission has been received for the PHILIPP MAINZER designed façade, all public spaces and the landscaping for the eight storey three-part apartment complex, BIG, in a high density area of Taipei, Taiwan, comprising an overall area of 8920 sqm.

A central element of the design by PHILIPP MAINZER OFFICE FOR ARCHITECTURE AND DESIGN is a cost-effective façade, which is particularly convincing due to its innovative and authentic appearance – especially for the target group of young clients – as well as its functional properties, making it highly resistant to the forces of nature such as heavy rains, storms and earthquakes typical in this area. The scope also comprises the interior design of retail spaces on the ground floor of one of the buildings, all public spaces in all buildings, including recreation rooms and corridors, as well as landscaping to integrate the BIG complex into high quality residential surroundings.

With the objective to create a modern yet unusual façade that stands out from its surroundings, a brick-look façade made from specially developed, weather and erosion-resistant tiles was designed as the shell of the apartment complex. Coloured expanded metal connects the window elements and structures the façade. The colour of the window frames corresponds with the colour of the expanded metal, creating a harmonious yet dynamic look in combination with the light grey brick structure.

The colour palette and metal elements of the façade continue on into the interior, exuding the same dynamic, authentic and fresh appeal as the exterior.

The commission was to develop a concept for a new-built luxury villa scheme, including a master plan for the total area spanning 46.000 sqm and for a residential villa scheme accommodating 61 houses. Utilizing available area as efficiently as possible each villa is imbedded in a range of small inward facing gardens, courtyards, and water ponds, providing a maximum level of privacy. A main focus of this commission was the interaction of each building with the landscape. An integrated landscape architecture in combination with a transparent design of each building generates a fluent transition between inside and outside, allowing each inhabitant to enjoy the beautiful surrounding.

Xue Xue Institute, Taipei, Interior Design

To create the first private university in Taiwan, the conversion of an empty, ten storey, 8200 sqm large office tower in the centre of Taipei’s Nai Hu commercial district into the Xue Xue Insitute was commissioned. Central to the interior design concept was the idea of promoting communication between different user groups to enhance interdisciplinary exchange as a basis for better working and learning – away from traditional podium-style lecturing towards a more active and lively exchange of ideas between professors and students. The completion of the interior included the conception of the ground floor shop and media gallery, the second floor restaurant and kitchen areas, as well as the classrooms and office facilities located on the third floor to sixth floor. A central element made from oak serves as guiding orientation on every floor. Alongside designing and realising the interior architecture, the briefing also included the planning and realisation of all furniture. The Xue Xue Institute is Taiwan’s first private academy dedicated entirely to the creative arts, design and culture.
